Securing the Future: Advocating for the Students Welfare Fund Bill on Capital FM

The airwaves at Capital FM buzzed with a critical conversation today one that directly impacts the future of education in our nation. As part of our relentless drive to champion legislation that uplifts youth, women, and students, the South Sudan National Youth Union (SSNYU), in partnership with Markaz Al Salam, took to the studio to shine a spotlight on the Students Welfare Fund Bill. This wasn’t just a discussion; it was a call to action to turn the promises of peace into tangible support for our students.

The Challenge of Access to Education

For many young people across South Sudan, the cost of higher education remains a significant barrier. While the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) promises peace dividends, these benefits must trickle down to the classrooms and university halls. Currently, the legislative framework needed to support students financially is lagging.

Our advocacy focuses on the urgent need for the Students Welfare Fund Bill to be passed into law. This bill is not just administrative paperwork; it is a mechanism designed to ensure that students can access the resources they need to thrive, rather than dropping out due to economic hardships. This initiative aligns perfectly with the SSNYU’s strategic priority to “strengthen the voice and influence of youth… by advocating for their rights [and] promoting youth-friendly policies”.

Youth Perspectives: Demanding Action

During the radio talk show, we explored the current status of the bill and emphasized why delay is no longer an option. The consensus was clear: peace is not just the absence of conflict; it is the presence of opportunity.

By operationalizing this fund, we are asking the government to invest in the intellectual capital of the nation. As we discussed on air, students are eager to contribute to the nation’s development, but they need the state to back them up. This aligns with our broader mission to advocate for issues such as education and employment, ensuring youth interests are not just heard, but acted upon.
