New Hub for Peace: Marial Baai Youth Centre Opens

The South Sudan National Youth Union (SSNYU) extends its warmest congratulations to the leadership of the Western Bahr El Gazal State Youth Union and the entire community of Marial Baai. Yesterday marked a significant milestone in our collective journey toward stability with the official opening of the new Youth Peace Centre. This facility stands not just as a structure, but as a testament to what we can achieve when youth leadership, local government, and international partners align their visions for a peaceful South Sudan.

Building Foundations for Unity

Earlier this year, the foundation for this success was laid quite literally. Mr. Motwakil Awol Mamour, Deputy Chairperson of SSNYU, had the privilege of participating in the stone-laying ceremony alongside the State Minister of Youth, Hon. Ali Koni, and various community stakeholders. The project was originally proposed by Mr. David Lawrence, the former Chairperson of the State Youth Union.

The vision was clear: to create a physical space that acts as a hub for peace and social cohesion. In many of our communities, young people lack designated spaces to gather, dialogue, and resolve differences constructively. This project, supported as a pilot by UNMISS, addresses that gap directly, offering the youth of Marial Baai and their neighbors a sanctuary for collaboration rather than conflict.

A Collective Achievement

The swift completion of this centre demonstrates the power of partnership. Within just a few months, the concept was transformed into reality. Mr. Manut Aniek, the SSNYU Acting Secretary for State Affairs, expressed deep gratitude to the partners who made this possible, particularly highlighting the role of the current Western Bahr El Gazal Youth Union leadership led by Andlina Gabriel.

This achievement highlights that our youth are ready to take ownership of their future. When provided with the right support and resources, young leaders in the states are capable of driving development projects that benefit their entire communities. The opening ceremony, filled with energy and optimism, signaled a new chapter for the youth in the region.

Expanding the Vision

As we celebrate this victory in Marial Baai, we look toward the horizon. The SSNYU commends UNMISS for their tangible support in bringing this centre to life. However, our work is far from finished. We are calling on UNMISS field offices across the country to look at Marial Baai as a blueprint.

We urge our partners to replicate similar projects for young people in other states. Every community in South Sudan deserves a dedicated space for peacebuilding and engagement. By investing in these infrastructures of peace, we are investing in a stable and united future for our nation.
